Description: Thallus perennial, gregarious, 0.5-2 m tall. Holdfast composed of flattened prostrate stipe, with simple or furcate haptera along the lateral margins. Stipe dichotomously branching as a result of longitudinal splitting which extends through the blades, rarely with more than 2 or 3 dichotomies, due to death and decay at older end. Blades borne singly on each arm of stipe. Blades linear, 4-8 cm wide, gradually tapering at both upper and lower ends, without midrib, both surfaces covered with irregular reticulum of narrow ridges. Reticulations on surface of blade fairly rectangular. Margins of blades with or without denticulations. Spores produced in unilocular sporangia with paraphyses in irregularly shaped sori, produced on both surfaces of blade. Gametophytes dimorphic, dioecious, oogamous, branched uniseriate filaments.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
