Holotype species: Diplocladia patersonis (Sonder) Kylin

Currently accepted name for the type species: Vertebrata patersonis (Sonder) Kuntze

Original publication and holotype designation: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Description: Thalli upright, up to 10 cm tall, polysiphonous, radially oriented. Pericentral cells 7, uncorticated. Branching dense, exogenous, deciduous trichoblasts on most segments, the basal cell of which often produces a polysiphonous branchlet. Branchlets may remain simple and spine-like, or become indeterminate for short or longer periods producing bushy thalli with branchlets covering axes. Reproductive structures on determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangia, 1 per segment, in short straight series in branchlets. Cystocarps ovoid, on short lateral stalks on branchlets. Male plants unknown.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
