Description: Cylindrical to complanate, soft, lubricous, or firmly gelatinous, irregularly branched to 2-4, usually progressively narrower orders. Sometimes annulate. Medulla of many slender filaments or a single, stout filament. Each axial cell bearing 2-7 cortical fascicles of subdi-, -trichotomously branched filaments of progressively narrower or smaller subcylindrical or subspherical cells. Rhizoidal filaments present. Secondary pit connections and cuticle absent. Cells uninucleate. Hairs sometimes present. Pit plugs lacking cap layers. Monoecious or dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a long adventitious filament, slightly distally recurved, unbranched or with one-few proximal, unbranched laterals. Fertilized carpogonium dividing and contacting one to three other cells of filament three or four cells below it; connecting filaments issuing from fusion process, contacting a succession of differentiated auxiliary cells in separate, adventitious filaments, which terminate like a vegetative filament. Several (two or three) gonimoblast initials arising from connecting filament attached to auxiliary cell, forming a usually compact, embedded cystocarp, in which essentially all cells mature into carposporangia. Carposporangia small. Spermatangia in terminal clusters on outer cells of cortical fascicles or in whorls around short, lateral, cortical branches. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic (tetrasporangia zonate, attached basally), or tetrasporophyte heteromorphic (tetrasporangia cruciate). Spore germination: diprotocellular--one division within wall of spore, then producing one or more rhizoid-like filaments, which subsequently branch distichously.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
