Original publication and holotype designation: Wille, N. (1898). Beschreibung einiger Planktonalgen aus norwegischen süsswasserseen. Biologisches Centralblatt 18: 302.

Description: Cells solitary or colonial, embedded in broad gelatinous matrix. After division, diads often more or less linearly arranged with cells touching or separated. Colony shape indefinite, determined by cell arrangement, side by side, and/or in a row, or at random, and by cell number. Cell membrane thin and hyaline, surrounded by mucilaginous , seldomly-layered sheath of different width. Cells fusiform, cylindrical, oval or elliptical, with rounded or pointed apices. Chloroplast single and parietal, laminate, cup- or girdle-shaped, straight or spiral, usually with one or two pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction known only by aplanospores. Multiplication of cells by vegetative cell division. Sexual reproduction unknown. Elakatothrix widely distributed planktonic algae in freshwater; juveniles may be epiphytic.
