Eugomontia Kornmann, 1960

Holotype species: Eugomontia sacculata Kornmann

Original publication: Kornmann, P. (1960). Die heterogene Gattung Gomontia II. Der fädige Anteil, Eugomontia sacculata nov. gen. nov. spec.. Helgoländer Wissenschaftliche Meeresuntersuchungen 7: 59-71.

Description: Uniseriate shell-boring filaments with frequent irregular branching, radially arranged in stellate growth habit. Initially occurring in outer layer of shell, later also invading inner layers. Cells uninucleate, basically cylindrical, and elongate. Chloroplast single, plate-like, sometimes lobed, with 1-4 pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores arising in strongly inflated cells in shell-boring portion of plant, finally giving rise to globose to sac-like zoosporangia. Discharge of zoospores via hyaline exit-tube ending to shell surface. Sexual reproduction by anisogamous biflagellate gametes arising in inflated cells of non shell-boring portion of plant, finally resulting in spherical gametangia. Life cycle isomorphic, diplohaplontic. Eugomontia with wide distribution in the Northern Hemisphere in Western Europe, and on Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Canada. Taxonomic position of Eugomontia uncertain. Despite ulotrichalean cell architecture, it can be reasonably placed in Ctenocladiales which includes algae with branched filaments of uninucleate cells with parietal laminate chloroplasts. Ctenocladiales also ultrastructurally characterized by ulvophycean features. Eugomontia not yet studied ultrastructurally and assignment to Ulotrichales uncertain.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
