Holotype species: Geniculus gatunensis Prescott

Original publication and holotype designation: Prescott, G.W. (1967 '1966'). Algae of the Panama Canal and its tributaries - II. Conjugales. Phykos 5: 1-49, 12 pls.

Description: Cells small, short-cylindric with truncate ends (10-12 um long, 6-8 µm ), bent (geniculate) in middle, with 1-2 fine gelatinous spines on corners of one or both apices (or, in one cell illustrated by author, from middle of cell). Cells in colonies, 8-16 cells within common, triangular, sheath. One or two chloroplasts per cell, axial and stellate with central pyrenoid. Nothing known regarding reproduction in this genus. Placement in Mesotaeniaceae considered tentative by Prescott; confirmation of taxonomic position awaits further studies. Geniculus known only from type locality, Gigante Bay, Gatun Lake (Panama Canal).
