Goniodoma F.Stein, 1883, nom. rejic.

Holotype species: Goniodoma acuminatum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein

Currently accepted name for the type species: Scrippsiella acuminata (Ehrenberg) Kretschmann, Elbrächter, Zinssmeister, S.Soehner, Kirsch, Kusber & Gottschling

Original publication and holotype designation: Stein, F. (1883). Die naturgeschichte der arthrodelen Flagellaten. In: Der Organismus der Infusionstiere. III. Pt. 2. ( Eds), pp. 1-30. Leipzig:

Description: Medium-size (30-95 µm) biflagellated cell, polyhedric to subspherical shaped, with a more or less median but slightly displaced cingulum; sulcus restricted to the hypocone. Cell wall of cellulosic plates, the plate borderlines as well as the cingulum sometimes crested. Plates may bear a heavy reticulation and have pores. Plate formula: Po, 3',7", 6c, 7s, 6'",2"", but this has been interpreted differently by various authors. The apical pore platelet has a typical hook- shaped pore, the first apical plate does not reach the cingulum. These characters are shared with species in the genera Pyrodinium and Alexandrium; therefore, several species of Alexandrium have been described as or transferred to Goniodoma. Cells with numerous chloroplasts, nucleus horseshoe-shaped. Reproduces by binary fission during motility; both daughter cells share the thecal plates of the mother cell, and the theca is split along a special fission line. The overlap pattern of the plates reflect this fission line. Sexual reproductiohn no reported. Bioluminescence has been reported, but there is no indication that species of this genus are toxic in contrast to those of the genera Alexandrium or Pyrodinium. Marine plankton, restricted to warm waters.

Information kindly contributed by M. Elbrächter but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Scrippsiella.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Steidinger, K.A. & Tangen, K. (1996). Dinoflagellates. In: Identifying Marine Phytoplankton. (Tomas, C.R. Eds), pp. 387-584. San Diego: Academic Press.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
