Description: Cell solitary, elongate-cylindrical with shallow median constriction (isthmus) where semicell walls overlap. Semicells with slight basal swelling and smooth, truncate apex. Cell apex without terminal vacuole. Cell wall appearing smooth or finely porose. Chloroplast two per cell, each an axial band or with irregular laminae, with central row of 2-15 pyrenoids. Nucleus in isthmus. Asexual reproductin by cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium). Sexual reproduction by conjugation. Gametes fuse between gametangia; zygospores globose, smooth or with obtuse conical protruberances. Karyogamy prior to zygospore germination, followed by meiosis.
