Description: Cells forming zigzag chains. Valves lanceolate or oval in small cells, sometimes rostrate and/or dilated at the centre, with apical pore fields. Valve face-mantle junction sometimes bearing cristae. Striae uniseriate to triseriate, sometimes mixed. Areolae circular or subquadrate, open or occluded by delicate hymenes, the latter being usually lost in preparation. Sternum distinct or indistinct. Internal valve face usually with thickened virgae forming transapical costae. Single fan-shaped rimoportula adjacent to midline near apical pore fields. Copulae numerous, with two rows of pores; septa, if present, closed less than half the cell length; pleurae often delicate, lacking septa.
