Description: Thallus of flat branched blades, with a midrib and lateral alae (wings) but lacking lateral veins. Growth from a single transversely dividing apical cell, the blades developing symmetrically, with all apical cells of second- and third-order cell rows reaching the margins. Structure monostromatic except for the midrib region; intercalary cell divisions lacking in all cell rows; branching by endogenous initials restricted to the midrib, or rarely from the mid-region of the alae. Cystocarps on midrib. Tetrasporangia on blades, in 2 or more layers, usually arranged in sori on both sides of the midrib. Spermatangia in variously shaped sori on alae, small (essentially occupying 1 cell) or coalescing in irregular shapes, or forming distinct chevrons.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
