Iyengaria Børgesen, 1939

Holotype species: Iyengaria stellata (Børgesen) Børgesen

Original publication and holotype designation: Børgesen, F. (1939). Marine algae from the Iranian Gulf especially from the innermost part near Bushire and the Island Kharg. In: Danish Scientific Investigations in Iran, Part 1. (Jessen, K. & Spärck, R. Eds), pp. 47-141. Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard.

Description: Plants forming firm cartilaginous cushions to 10 cm high, generally in monspecific stands spreading across the substratum. Surface irregularly furrowed, covered with branched knobbly protrusions, these to ca. 10 mm long, tapering upward and ending in a broad obtuse apex. Thallus solid initially, becoming hollow. Structure parenchymatous throughout. Large (to 300 m) polygonal thin-walled medullary cells, with cell size diminishing towards the surface. Epidermal cells 8-11 (- 15) m in diameter. Hairs present in scattered bundles. Uniseriate plurilocular sporangia with up to 8 loculi, 40-50 (-75) m long ( 6 (-12) m in diameter, produced in sori without paraphyses. Unilocular sporangia not reported. Forms extensive stands in the midshore on fairly wave exposed coasts in western India and the Iranian Gulf, and reported on the south coast of South Africa. The genus is in need of re-investigation, particularly as the only species is recorded from the tropical north west Indian Ocean and warm temperate South Africa, but nowhere in between.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
