Description: Unicellular, solitary, free-living, non-motile organisms. Cells 5-14 _m diameter and generally spherical, with a very regular and strongly scrobiculate parietal ornamentation. Scrobiculations between the parietal ribs are always very regularly distributed in three or four directions, circular and with high surface area. In optical section the scrobiculations give the a three, five, six or eight sided shape, corresponding to described species with different dimensions, but which actually group together into the same taxon. The cell wall is mostly firm (possibly made of two sections), probably strongly silicified and often brown. Chloroplasts single to numerous per cell, parietal and sometimes very pale. Method of asexual reproduction unknown. Keriosphaera in acidic brooks and ponds in peat bogs; known only from central Europe. Bourrelly synonymized Keriosphaera, Chlorarkys and Trachycystis into Arachnochloris, but the parietal structure of the two first named genera differs from the two others as does chloroplast morphology. In addition, Keriosphaera has actual scrobiculations whereas Chlorarkys presents a network of ribs in relief.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
