Description: Free-swimming, acuminate, biflagellate monads; with a furrow-gullet system consisting of a tubular gullet extending posteriorly from the subapical vestibulum, and lined usually with two to four rows of ejectisomes; single chloroplast, pyrenoid and nucleomorph, the choroplast with the phycobiliprotein Cr-phycocyanin 645 and varying in color from blue-green to green and fading to yellow-green in older cells; the periplast with inner and superficial component plates. Sexual reproduction is unknown; reproduction is by simple cell division. Cysts are unknown and palmelloid colonies apparently not formed. The ultrastructure has been examined. The periplast has hexagonal inner and superficial component plates, the superficial plates being composed of minute subunits in a crystalline array. The nucleomorph is closely appressed to the ventral surface of the pyrenoid, but is not within the pyrenoidal matrix. Thylakoids do not traverse the pyrenoidal matrix. Cosmopolitan distribution in freshwater habitats, including temporary ponds, rivers and lakes. Komma represents a natural assemblage of cryptomonads - probably four or five more than the single present species. There is some doubt, however, whether Komma is synonymous with Chroomonas or not.
