Mantoniella T.V.Desikachary, 1972

Holotype species: Mantoniella squamata (Manton & Parke) Desikachary

Original publication and holotype designation: Desikachary, T.V. (1972). Notes on Volvocales - I. Current Science (Bangalore) 41: 445-447.

Description: Unicellular flagellates with two flagella, but one flagellum is so short as to appear knob-like in the light microscope. The long flagellum is directed posteriorly during swimming. The cell contains a single parietal crescentic chloroplast with a pyrenoid. Stigma located on the pyrenoid surface. The cell also contains ejectile organelles, probably mucilage containing (mucocysts). Cells covered with several types of submicroscopic unmineralized scales. Flagellar scales of two types, hair-shaped scales in two nearly opposite rows inserted between longitudinal rows of spineless spiderweb scales. Two additional types of spiderweb scales cover the cell body. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Comments: The type species is distributed world-wide in marine and brackish environments, while the second species, M. antarctica, is known only from the Antarctic. It differs in structure of the scaly covering. Studies on ultrastructure and mitosis by Barlow and Cattolico (1980, 1981), Marchant and others (1989) and Moestrup (1990). Mantoniella and its allies in the Mamiellaceae are considered to be some of the most primitive green plants.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
