Mastigocoleopsis Geitler, 1925

Holotype species: Mastigocoleopsis obtusa (N.Carter) Geitler

Original publication and holotype designation: Geitler, L. (1925). Synoptische darstellung der Cyanophyceen in morphologischer und systematischer Hinsicht. Beihefte zum Botanischen Centralblatt 41(Abt. 2): 163-294, pls XVII-XX.

Description: Thallose; thallus in a form of thin mats, composed of free, irregularly coiled filaments. Filaments with thick, firm, homogeneous or layered, diverging, colorless, sometimes transversally constricted sheaths. Trichomes uniseriate with isodiametrical and more or less long, cylindrical cells with blue-green content, constricted at crosswalls. True branching common, lateral, of T- and V-type; branches long, continually tapering to the ends (but not forming terminal hairs; the hair-like ends are thin rests of empty sheaths ?), or short, cylindrical. Heterocytes and akinetes not known. Cells divide evidently crosswise and lateral before branching. Reproduction not described, hormogonia not observed. The aerophytic type species was described from bark of trees in New Caledonia and not recorded again.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
