Holotype species: Medeiothamnion sanctacrucense Pujals

Original publication and holotype designation: Pujals, C. (1970). Medeiothamnion nuevo género de Ceramiaceae. Revista del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" e Instituto Nacional de Investigacion de las Ciencias Naturales (Botanica) 3(10): 287-299.

Axial cells with whorls of 2-5 pinnately to subdichotomously branched determinate branchlets. Procarps subapical on short lateral branchlets, carpogonial branches 4-celled on one (supporting cell) of 3 pericentral cells. Following fusion of enlarged cells of carpogonial branch the auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, leads to development of carposporophyte with successive development of carposporangial groups and surrounding involucral filaments. Spermatangial heads on cells of determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangla on inner cells of branchlets, tetrahedrally divided. Distinguished from other genera of Sphondylothamnieae by form of hypogenous cell, single auxiliary cell per procarp and multinucleate gonimolobe cells.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
