Holotype species: Microcoryne ocellata Strömfelt

Original publication and holotype designation: Strömfelt, H.F.G. (1888). Algae novae quas ad litora Scandinaviae indagavit. Notarisia 9: 381-384, 1 table.

Description: Thalli epiphytic, globose, cylindrical or clavate, simple or forked, to 5 mm high. Multiaxial thallus construction, consisting of a medulla of several syntagmatic erect filaments which are unpigmented, large-celled and di- or trichotomously branched, and a cortex formed by pigmented assimilatory filaments, hyaline hairs and plurilocular sporangia. Asimilatory filaments curved, below with rectangular cells, above becoming barrel-shaped to moniliform. Plurilocular sporangia uniseriate, straight, formed within cortex on supporting cells of assimilatory filaments. Unilocular sporangia unknown. Life history direct. Endemic to the cold-temperate part of the Atlantic coasts of Europe.
