Description: Thallus club-shaped and worm-like calcified unbranched unicell 1-2.5 cm tall with an apical tuft of hairs. Calcification ring-like, segmented bands. Axis bearing densely packed whorls of 30-40 laterals each branched to the third degree. First degree branches free (N. van Bosseae) or coherent (N. dumetosa). Secondary laterals modified to one uninucleate gametangium and two swollen photosynthetic units that form a faceted surface barely protruding beyond the calcification at the surface. Each gametangium forms a single cyst which after multiple divisions form biflagellate gametes which are liberated after the opening of a structured operculum. Parietal chloroplasts numerous and discoid without pyrenoids; starch grains both inside and outside plastid, the latter not membrane bound. Neomeris cosmopolitan in tropical and subtropical seas. From shallows to 30 m; firmly attached to solid substrate. Often the only macrophyte in a heavy current or eroded area. Known from fossil record to the Cretaceous.
