Description: Gametophytic frond membranous; ovate, lanceolate, oblong, round, linear, laciniate, and thereof; mainly epiphytic, occasionally epizoic, rarely epilithic; frond purple, pink, red in color; margin microscopically entire; monostromatic; 14- 60 µm thick; vegetative cells containing one stellate plastid; sexual thalli monoecious: (i) with spermatangia and zygotosporangia intermixed in the fertile region of the thalli, (ii) with group of cells forming either spermatangia or zygotosporangia in streaks or patches, (iii) divided into male and female sectors by a vertical line. Distinguished from other bladed Bangiales by rbcL and 18S sequence differences combined with cold temperate distribution, low intertidal niches and entire margin (no dentition).
