Description: Spherical cells between 22 and 40 µm in diameter. A large, peripheral blue-green chloroplast with multiple lobes extending from cell periphery to cell center. Lobes can be fused at different regions along their extensions. Multiple pyrenoids at the innermost, perinuclear ends of lobes. Pyrenoids contain a small number of thylakoids with sparse opposed phycobilisomes. Peripheral thylakoid absent. Central nucleus. Nuclear invaginations into pyrenoids absent. Golgi bodies restricted to perinuclear region. Low molecular weight carbohydrate is mannitol.
