Description: Brown, irregularly branched endophytic filaments growing by a prominent apical cell, subapical cells undivided or undergoing 1-2 longitudinal divisions. Vegetative cells containing numerous discoid chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Negative "eau de Javel" reaction. Reproduction by 9-celled propagules developing without the ***small apical cell produced early in development ("sphacle en calotte" of Sauvageau) in propagules of Sphacelaria. Propagules germinating by growth from 4 laterally-oriented apical cells. Propagule-forming filaments also reproducing by unilocular sporangia, in O. bahamensis restricted to 8-10 h daylengths at ca. 25%C and producing zoospores germinating to form anisogamous gametophytes. In O. endophytica unispore germlings reproducing same stage, or at 20%C and 8 h daylength forming only short-celled filaments with plurilocular zoidangia, but sexuality unknown. Marine, epiphytic or endophytic in larger algae, known from N. Carolina-Florida and the Bahama Is.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
