Paulschulzia Skuja, 1948

Holotype species: Paulschulzia pseudovolvox (P.Schulz) Skuja

Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1948). Taxonomie des Phytoplanktons einiger Seen in Uppland, Schweden. Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 9(3): 1-399, 39 pls.

Description: Microscopic, spherical to ellipsoid colonies to 300 &m diameter with 4-64 (-248) cells in dispersed clusters embedded in extensive mucilaginous matrix. Entire aggregate with several generations of subcolonies with 4, 8 or 16 cells each with distinct envelope. Cells spherical to ovoid, 5-13 &m, with or without two anterior, non-motile pseudoflagella to 85 &m long, directed to exterior of colony; pseudoflagella rigid or lax. Cells uninucleate with two anterior contractile vacuoles; single parietal chloroplast cup shaped (stellate in P. pseudovolvox), with single basal pyrenoid with distinct starch sheath; stigma absent. Colony growth by division of cells into two or four to form new subcolonies, up to four generations of colonies within a single matrix; asexual reproduction by fragmentation of large colonies and by biflagellate zoospores, 5-7 x 3-4 &m, liberated from colonies. Young colonies with four tetrahedral cells. Sexual reproduction unknown. Paulschultzia planktonic in freshwater lakes; reported from Europe, North America and India. P. pseudovolvox available in culture collection (UTEX 167). Genus similar to Tetraspora but distinguished by formation of distinct subcolonies; some authors suggest recognizing Paulschulzia as subgenus of Tetraspora.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
