Phyllobium Klebs, 1881

Holotype species: Phyllobium dimorphum Klebs

Original publication and holotype designation: Klebs, G. (1884). Beiträge zur Kenntnis niederer Algenformen. Botanische Zeitung 39(17): 265-272.

Description: Thalli unicellular, endophytic, growing in dead (rarely living) leaves of some vascular plants or bryophytes. Cells solitary or in groups, irregularly globose, ellipsoidal, prolonged ovoid or club-shaped, usually with single cell wall protrusions forming elongated, sometimes branched, rhizoid-like projections. Chloroplast as parietal plates or radially arranged strands. Asexual reproduction unknown. Sexual reproduction anisogamous; after fusion, microgametes loose flagella, resulting in biflagellate zygote. After short motile period zygospore settles on host plant and forms tubular projection that penetrates into host. Vegetative cells form more or less globose or ellipsoidal resting cells containing considerable starch and red oil droplets. On germination resting cells release gametes. Phyllobium endophytic, found in leaves of some vascular plants or bryophytes (e.g., Lysimachia, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Sphagnum); reported from Europe and North America. Genus of uncertain status, recent observations lacking.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
