Description: Thallus to 2 (-3) m long with ligulate axes bearing flat marginal lateral branches and vesicles. Conical holdfast with superimposed whorls of radiating, branched haptera. Growth from an apical meristem consisting of one 4-sided apical cell and surrounding meristematic tissue. Thallus is parenchymatous and differentiated into a meristoderm of small cells with numerous chloroplasts, a cortex of larger, vacuolate cells and a filamentous medulla. Discoid chloroplasts lack pyrenoids. Life history is diplontic. Sexual reproduction is oogamous. Individuals are dioecious with receptacles developing as short lateral branches on main axes and bearing conceptacles containing antheridia or oogonia. Spermatozoids are heterokont lacking an eyespot and phototaxis, and having a collar-like structure formed by flagellar root microtubules around the base of the anterior flagellum. Oogonia produce one egg, approximately 150 µm diameter, and several vestigial cells. On egg release, the oogonial collar (derived from the mesochiton) is transformed into a mucilaginous stalk attaching the egg to the conceptacle. Spermatozoids stick to the stalk and move through it before fertilization.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
