Description: Thalli microscopic, primarilly forming prostrate wide-spreading open networks of coarse filaments although richly branched species tend towards a pseudoparenchymatous layer. Erect axes to 450 µm, few to many or none, with or without tapering. When present, erect axes to Cells, cylindrical to ellipsoid to globular, 10-50 µm long and 3-20 µm in diameter with species-specific ranges within these extremes. Cell walls smooth to roughened. Cells uninucleate, chloroplasts parietal and band-shaped, in older cells sometimes becoming numerous and discoid. Plants typically green, but vary from orange to yellow Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores. Sporangia globular to reniform, terminal on erect 1-4 celled sporangiophores, sporangia subtended by specialized, retorsely bent, suffultory cell. During sporangium maturation it becomes detached from suffultory cell and dispersed by insects, wind and rain. When immersed in water and papilla-pore opens and releases zoospores. Sexual reproduction by biflagellate isogametes, narrowly oblanceolate when active. Gametangia elliptical, globular or ovoid, terminal on short lateral horizonal branches or sessile and lateral in plane of main filaments or lateral on erect hairs. Gametangia usually solitary and non-regenerating into empty terminal gametangia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
