Description: Thalli unicellular or consisting of diads or planar or tetrahedral tetrads; several generations of cells often forming irregular cell masses without gelatinous matrix. Thalli become multicellular through vegetative cell division (desmoschisis); cells often dissociating with age. Cells spherical to 16-20 &m diameter, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, light green in young cells, becoming yellow-orange with age; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by naked biflagellate zoospores. Zoospores 8-17 x 2.5-4 &m, with apically inserted flagella about 14.5 &m long and trailing; spore shape variable, often rounded at posterior and pointed at anterior; spores with anterior nucleus, eyespot and two contractile vacuoles. Sexual reproduction isogamous, gametes produced in cells of tetrahedral complexes. Gametes similar to zoospores; after syngamy, zygote initially quadriflagellate. Site of meiosis unknown. Pseudotetracystis known only from Texas in soil sample.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
