Description: Colonial, free-floating algae with typically up to 16 globular cells immersed in thick mucilaginous envelope to 250 &m diameter, with or without radially aligned striations in mucilage. Cells 3-15 &m diameter, mostly with smooth cell walls, occasionally with several verrucose outgrowths. Cells often tetrahedrally arranged, though occasionally in rings or dispersed. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; (4-) 8 per sporangium; release accompanied by fragmentation of parental cell wall into as many fragments as spores produced. Cell wall fragments remaining distinct in mucilage for some time before being dissolved. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Radiococcus planktonic in freshwater; reported from Europe and North America, probably more widely distributed. Species distinguished based on colony shape and cell size; one species, R. subcylindricus apparently without pyrenoids. Genus similar to Korschpalmella which does not have pyrenoids.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
