Description: Unicellular organisms rarely solitary but mostly in pairs or in bundles of four individuals without mucilage. Cells 18-30 _m long and 3-5 _m wide, very elongate, cylindro-fusiform, very rarely rectilinear, mostly curved and sometimes S-shaped. Cell apices very pointed to blunt, sometimes differing in the same individual. Cell wall thin, sometimes bordered with a very fine mucilage layer, without apical thickenings or ornamentation. Two or more chloroplasts (very rarely single), parietal, cup shaped or grooved, weakly pigmented and practically colorless. Cytoplasm with oil droplets and lipids. Asexual reproduction by autosporulation with mostly four spores produced per mother cell. Autospores with one or two chloroplasts, parallel in the cell or in a fascicle in the mother cell. Zoospores sometimes produced; morphological details unknown except for presence of contractile vacuoles. Ellipsoidal cysts with thickened cell walls present, generally containing four cells in a row. Raphidiella extremely rare, known only from freshwater; reported only from central Europe. Based on cell form and organization this alga can be confused with the green alga Ankistrodesmus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
