Raphidiopsis F.E.Fritsch & M.F.Rich, 1929

Holotype species: Raphidiopsis curvata F.E.Fritsch & M.F.Rich

Original publication and holotype designation: Fritsch, F.E. & Rich, F. (1929). Freshwater algae from Griqualand West. Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa 18: 1-123.

Description: Filamentous; trichomes solitary, free floating, without sheaths or gelatinous envelopes, straight, waved or screw-like coiled, isopolar, uniseriate, usually slightly attenuated toward both ends (or to one end after trichome dissociation), but not elongated in cellular hair-like ends, constricted at crosswalls. Cells barrel-shaped, sometimes slightly elongated to the ends, facultatively with gas vesicles (aggregated in aerotopes); apical cells conical-rounded or pointed. Heterocytes missing. Akinetes develop in the middle of trichomes in series. Reproduction by dissociation of trichomes. Only planktonic, freshwater species, sometimes forming slight water blooms, several species occur only in geographically limited areas (tropical species, China, etc.). Emend. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
