Original publication and holotype designation: Kociolek, J.P. & Thomas, E.W. (2010). Taxonomy and ultrastructure of five naviculoid diatoms (class Bacillariophyceae) from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado (USA), with the description of a new genus and four new species. Nova Hedwigia 90(1/2): 195-214, 62 figs.

Description: Valves large, axial area is narrow, straight, forming a small central area. Raphe lateral, undulate, external proximal ends swollen, external distal ends hooked. Striae are radiate, with the 1st and/or 2nd striae at the apices parallel or, rarely, convergent. Marginal puncta are large and more coarsely arranged. Puncta comparatively smaller and rounded, except puncta near the axial area, which are in two rows per stria. Striae around the central area have large, round puncta isolated in the central area. The smallest striae at the apices are doubly-punctate throughout their length. Puncta occur in groups at the apices on the mantle. Septa and pseudosepta present.
