Original publication and holotype designation: Hughey, J.R., Leister, G.L., Gabrielson, P.W. & Hommersand, M.H. (2020). Sarcopeltis gen. nov. (Gigartinaceae, Rhodophyta), with S. skottsbergii comb. nov. from southern South America and S. antarctica sp. nov. from the Antarctic Peninsula. Phytotaxa 468(1): 75-88, 4 figs.

Description: Plant a large, to 50 cm, more or less circular, umbilicate, decumbent to mostly erect blade, with a short, central, discoid holdfast and frequently with numerous, secondary, peg-like haptera; margin undulate, entire or deeply incised to center of blade. Blade cartilaginous and thick, to 640 µm, with filamentous, mesh-like medulla comprising 75% of blade thickness, grading to cellular cortex of subspherical cells. Female gametophytes producing papillae; carpogonial branches and earliest post-fertilization stages not seen; diploidized auxiliary cell forming lateral and inward protusions; gonimoblast cells growing outward and forming terminal, tubular cells that fuse with surrounding vegetative gametophyte cells that have not formed an envelope around the expanding gonimoblast cells; cystocarps borne on papillae on female gametophytes. Tetrasporophytes form tetrasporangia entirely from secondary medullary filaments.
