Description: Cells solitary, small to medium sized, with shallow or deep median constriction (isthmus) where semicell walls overlap. End view of cell elliptical or, more commonly, triangular or multiangular. Cell angles each with single stout or tiny spine, small granule or cell wall incrassation. Cell wall elsewhere unormamented but with scattered pores through which a broad gelatinous sheath often produced. Chloroplasts one per semicell, axial with lobes toward each angle of cell and one or two pyrenoids. Nucleus in isthmus. Asexual reproduction by cell division and new semicell formation characteristic of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium). Sexual reproduction by conjugation known in several species. Conjugating cells come together and secrete a broad gelatinous envelope. Gametes fuse within conjugation tube; mature zygospore spherical, with many short or long, acute spines.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Coesel, P.F.M. & Meesters, J. (2013). European flora of the desmid genera Staurastrum and Staurodesmus. pp. [1]-357, 5 text-figs, 120 pls. Zeist: KNNV Publishing.

Comments: Several species widespread; planktonic or periphytic in acidic, oligotrophic aquatic habitats. Staurodesmus combines most of the illegitimate genus Arthrodesmus with species of Staurastrum having unispinose angles; it cannot be absolutely distinguished from Staurastrum or Xanthidium because of intergrading forms.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
