Description: Plants reach 50 cm in height, are erect from crustose holdfasts, and are flattened or terete depending on the species. Central axial cells remain prominent throughout the fronds, and each bears either (2-)3 or 4 periaxial cells, depending again on the species. Spermatangial clusters occur on uniseriate filaments, those of S. furcata (Harvey) J. Agardh also bearing tetrasporangial primordia in addition to spermatangia (Womersley 1971), these being the only tetrasporangia reported for the genus (Searles 1968).

Comments: Distribution: Both species occur subtidally along southern Australia from southwest Western Australia to Victoria.
