Whidbeyella Setchell & N.L.Gardner, 1903

Holotype species: Whidbeyella cartilaginea Setchell & N.L.Gardner

Original publication and holotype designation: Setchell, W.A. & Gardner, N.L. (1903). Algae of northwestern America. University of California Publications in Botany 1: 165-418, Plates 17-27.

Description: Female gametophytes erect from discoid holdfast, stipitate; axes complanate, dichotomously branched blades with rounded apices, multiaxial, with a broad medulla of slender, branching rhizoidal filaments interspersed with large, thick-walled longitudinal filaments. Cortical filaments arising from larger cells of medulla, curving outward and branching dichotomously to form spherical cortical cells. Cortex surface a layer of large, lightly colored utricle cells surrounded by rosettes of smaller, richly pigmented cells. Female gametophytes form 3-celled carpogonial filaments at dichotomies of the larger medullary filaments; hypogynous cells form a whorl of 3 large nutritive cells prior to fertilization. Gonimoblast originates from the hypogynous cell. Pericarp originates from the supporting cell and basal cell of the carpogonial branch to form an ostiolate cavity. Gonimoblast filaments line the inner wall of the pericarp and form chains of carposporangia toward the center of the cavity. Male gametophytes and tetrasporophytes unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
