Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Monotypic when first introduced. - (23 Jan 2017) - M.D. Guiry
Description: Plants reach dimensions of 50 by 20 cm, are erect from crustose bases, and are compressed or flattened, irregularly to dichotomously divided and usually marginally proliferous. Medullary filaments are few and usually loosely arranged. GametophyteS are monoecious, the spermatangia occurring in small superficial sori. Supporting cells are monocarpogonial and usually 3-celled. Tetrasporophytes in the type species are crustose, corresponding in morphology to Cruoria rosea (P. L. and H. M. Crouan) P. L. and H. M. Crouan, whereas those in H. latissimum Okamura are reported to be isomorphic with the gametophytes. Life history studies have been made by Boillot (1965), and anatomy has been investigated by Knauss and Hommersand (1989).

Comments: Distribution: The type species is widespread in the eastern Atlantic from Norway to Morocco and Great Britain, and the Mediterranean Sea. The second species, H. latissimum Okamura, occurs in southern Japan.
