Description: Erect thallus, up to 30 cm tall, radially branched many times, attached by small prostrate parts of axis having unicellular rhizoids but without trichoblasts; axes polysiphonous, with monopodial growth, cylindrical and uncorticated; segments with 7 pericentrals, each segment with a branched, persistent, pigmented trichoblast borne in a spiral on the axis; trichoblasts branch in a single plane. Lateral polysiphonous branches formed on trichoblast basal cells. Procarps borne on the 2nd cell of a trichoblast which remains smaller than vegetative ones; two sterile cell groups attached to supporting cell as well as the carpogonial branch which in B. australis has a 5th cell, attached to the basal cell of the carpogonial branch. Spermatangial capitula cylindrical, either replacing trichoblast or a proximal branch of trichoblast. Tetrasporangia borne spirally in stichidia bearing reduced trichoblasts; two pre-sporangial cover cells formed and a single tetrasporangium per segment; mature sporangia cause segments to become swollen.

Comments: B. byssoides occurs on the temperate Atlantic coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean; B. australis occurs in New Zealand and southern and Western Australia.
