Type designated in Mason, L.R. (1953). The crustaceous coralline algae of the Pacific coast of the United States, Canada and Alaska. University of California Publications in Botany 26: 313-389, Plates 27-46.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Description: Thallus attached to the substratum or as rhodoliths, encrusting, layered, lumpy or warty, non-geniculate. Thallus dimerous in construction; medulla not a palisade. Cortex with trichocytes of various shapes and frequency. Cortical filaments terminated externally by 1, rarely 2 epithallial cells. Sporangial conceptacles with bisporangia or zonate tetrasporangia.
