Description: Thallus erect or with prostrate and erect axes; growth by alternate oblique divisions of apical cells. Primary indeterminate axes with 3–5 whorl branches per axial cell; indeterminate branches arising from basal cells of whorl branches; cortication present or absent, formed by encircling filaments arising from reduced or basal cells of regular whorl branches, and (in some species) descending rhizoids arising from basal cells of whorl branches, or (in some species) secondary filaments arising from descending rhizoids. Cells uninucleate. Spermatangia arising in involucrate pedicellate heads borne on the basal cells of whorl branches. Carposporophytes terminal on branches, with a large fusion cell subtending gonimoblasts, with terminal carposporangia; involucral filaments in 2 ranks. Tetrasporangia borne on lower cells of whorl branches, involucrate, tetrahedrally divided.
