Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

The type has been conserved. Silva (1994: 260) notes: This name was first definitely accepted by Kützing (1849: 744), but is illegitimate because it was applied to a genus that subsumed Constantinea Postels & Rupr. 1840. Because a type was not indicated, Neurocaulon must be typified with N. rosa-marina (S. G. Gmel.) Kiitz. (Fucus rosa-marina S. G. Gmel.), the designated type of Constantinea. Taxonomically, however, two distinct genera are involved. Conservation of Neurocaulon with N. foliosum (Menegh.) Zanardini ex Kütz. as conserved type fixes the application of the generic name in its present sense." This proposal was accepted. - (23 Jan 2017) - M.D. Guiry
Description: Plants reach 12 cm in length, are erect from a discoid holdfast, terete and cartilaginous below, and proliferous above with simple and very distinctive reniform blades. Carpogonial branches and auxiliary cells are similar to those of Halarachnion. Tetrasporangia are produced in diminutive crusts from which erect gametophytes also arise. Anatomical and life history studies have been made by Codomier (1967, 1969).

Comments: Distribution: The type and the second species, H. grandifolium Rodriguez, are endemic to the Mediterranean Sea.
