Description: Sporophytic thalli filiform, tufted, mostly oppositely branched, monosiphonous in the upper part and polysiphonous in the other part, with obvious main axis, attached with rhizoidal holdfast, forming terminal quadrinucleate sporangia, sessile or on 1-2 celled stalks. Gametophytic thalli (= Scaphospora stage) similar to sporophyte, somewhat smaller, more delicate, sparser branched. Oogonia intercalary, formed from branch cell by longitudinal division, often in pairs, occasionally arising directly from branch cell. Antheridia formed on the same thalli as oogonia, adjacent to oogonia, plurilocular, pedicellate, tubular. Kuhlenkamp and Müller (1985) cultured H. globosa from Newfoundland and demonstrated alternations between sporophyte and gametophyte without sexual reproduction and nuclear alternations. Sporophyte undergos incomplete meiotic processes in sporangium initials. They detected occurrence of hormosirene in mature gametophytes releasing eggs, however, actual fertilization could not be observed. Sperm did not germinate. Occasional formations of larger loculi in the antheridia observed and those spores developed into new sporophytes. Chromosome number reported to be n=50 (43-54) by them. In Heligoland, only sporophytic plants occur (Kornmann and Sahling 1977). In culture, quadrinucleate spores from field plants developed into sporophytes, whose spores produced a small portion of aposporic gametophytes. Haplospora in Heligoland therefore suggested to have reduced life history with dominating sporophyte. Chromosome counts in these plants n = 25 (22-28).
