Phaeostrophion Setchell & N.L.Gardner, 1924

Holotype species: Phaeostrophion irregulare Setchell & N.L.Gardner

Original publication and holotype designation: Setchell, W.A. & Gardner, N.L. (1924). Phycological contributions, VII. University of California Publications in Botany 13: 1-13.

Description: Plants attached by a perennial discoid holdfast attaining 20 cm in diameter, bearing one to several erect thalli. Erect thalli annual, parenchymatous, often irregularly torn, up to 25 cm in height, 4.5 cm in width, ligulate, solid, with a slender stipe, composed of colorless, large and elongate inner cells and 1-3 celled pigmented cortical cells. Each cells contain several to many flattened chloroplasts. Pyrenoids not obvious in the cells of erect thallus. Growth of the blade occurs chiefly from a localized basal meristem. Unilocular and plurilocular sporangia formed on the same or separate erect thalli, transformed from the cortical cells. Unilocular sporangia ellipsoid, 30-60 _m in length and 20-35 _m in diameter. Plurilocular sporangia 1-2 seriate, 35-75 _m in length and 1- 25 _m in width, associated with 2 celled paraphyses. Mathieson (1967) reported direct type of life history. P. irregulare. Unispores as well as plurispores from macrothalli developed in the same manner, producing laminate erect thalli immediately of after a succession of discoid and filamentous plethysmothalli. Unispores as well as plurispores normally biflagellated containing one or 2 chloroplast with a stigma. Sexual reproduction not observed. Endemic to Pacific coast of North America.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
