Description: Thallus with erect dichotomously or trichotomously branched, palmate, laciniate or flabellate flattened fronds, gelatinous. Structure multiaxial, cortex of 2-3 layers of small cells, outer cells anticlinally elongated, medulla of 2-3 layers of large colorless cells interspersed with smaller cells. Spermatangia in widespread, irregular, scattered sori. Procarpic, gonimoblast developing outwards. Cystocarps inconspicuously ostiolate, scattered, never coronate, protruding outwards and inwards, tela arachnoidea absent. Tetrasporangia formed from cortical filaments over most of the thallus surface in large, confluent, reticulate sori. Spores regularly cruciately arranged.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Hoyt (1920: 488) described the carposporangia of Agardhinula browneae as being enclosed by "...branching filaments running from the wall of the cystocarp", thus suggesting the possibility of a tela arachnoidea; however, Kylin (1956) and Schneider and Searles (1973, 1991) confirmed that such a network is absent. Kylin (1956) placed Agardhinulain the Chrysymenia group, probably because of its gelatinous consistency and the smaller cells occurring between the large medullary cells.

Schneider and Searles (1973) report that in the deep subtidal of North Carolina Agardhinula browneae appears as plants a few mm high in June and matures by late July or early August.

A. browneae is reported from depths of 17-55 m on the continental shelf off North Carolina (Hoyt 1920; Schneider and Searles 1973, 1991) and Florida (Taylor 1960).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
