Description: Thallus unbranched unicell 3-10 cm long, uncalcified. Morphology as in Acetabularia except without cap, and with persistent whorls of sterile hairs, the apical 6-10 of which develop spherical gametangia in the axes of the first order branching. Gametangia, homologous to rays of Acetabularia, form uninucleate cysts. Nucleus development and life history identical to Acetabularia. Batophora tropical; common in Caribbean/Atlantic in brackish to hypersaline shallow habitats, especially in mangrove lagoons and canals. Also in brackish inland lakes in New Mexico, USA. B. largoensis known only from Florida. Thalli firmly attached to solid substrates. Flagellar apparatus similar to Acetabularia, however, rhizoplast present. Cultured cells of Batophora studied for nucleo-cytoplasmic interactions, nucleus development and molecular biology. Most similar to Dasycladus and Chlorocladus, and these genera often classified together in subfamily of Dasycladaceae

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
