Description: Cartilaginous crust. Basal layer producing firmly united filaments, at first almost prostrate, becoming erect, forming a stratified middle layer. Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Schizymenia.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Ardré, F. (1977). Sur le cycle du Schizymenia dubyi (Chauvin ex Duby) J. Agardh (Némastomacée, Gigartinale). Revue Algologique, Nouvelle Serie 12: 73-86.

Comments: Ardré (1977, 1980) has shown the type species (from France) to be the tetrasporophyte of Schizymenia dubyi (Chauv. ex Duby) J. Agardh; DeCew (1983, unpublished) has observed the type species from California to be the tetrasporophyte of Schizymenia pacifica (Kylin) Kylin. Maggs & Guiry (1982) reported tetraspores from Haematocelis fissurata Crouan et Crouan, known from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of France, to develop into thalli of Sphaerococcous coronopifolius Stackhouse. No culture work has been done on Haematocelis zonalis Dawson et Neushul from California.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
