Description: Branched, cylindrical thallus, gelatinous or cartilaginous, olive to brown-velvet to black, up to 11 cm long and 100-1000 µm diam. Central, uniseriate axis covered by several layers of medullary filaments and densely branched cortical fascicles of limited growth. Spermatangia globular, 2-4 µm diam. Carpogonial branches somewhat twisted and arising from proximal fascicle cells, forming symmetrical carpogonia with long, clavate trichogynes. Carposporophyte of indeterminate branching filaments arising from dense, primary gonimoblast and terminating in large elliptical carposporangia. Chantransia stage not observed. Ultrastructure of N. lindaueri well studied. Pit plugs typical batrachospermalean with 2 cap layers, the outer one of which is domed. Hair cells have a basal collar, single nucleus and abundant Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticula (ER) and vesicles. Dividing apical cells of fascicles have a zone of exclusion containing a single polar ring adjacent to nucleus. Carpogonial branch and involucral cells contain a prominent axial nucleus, proplastids, ER and vesicles. Pit plugs disintegrate among these cells. Carpogonia have plentiful mitochondria and vesicles. Wall at trichogyne apex thickened and densely stained. Carposporophyte centre consists of mass of fusion cells. Emend. Entwisle & M.L.Vis (2016: 389).

Comments: Occurs in freshwater streams in New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar. N. nodosus and N. lindaueri, often in close association in southeast Australia, late summer to autumn, large and open rivers, temperature 6-19°C, pH 6.4-8.0 and specific conductance 82-109 µS cm-1. Considered to be a Section of Batrachospermum by Necchi & Entwisle (1990).
