Chromophyton Woronin, 1880

Holotype species: Chromophyton rosanoffii Woronin

Original publication: Phillips, F.W. (1884). On Chlorodesmos hispida, a new flagellated animalcule. Transactions of the Herfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club 2: 92-94, 1 pl.

Description: Cells globular with 2 flagella (1 long, 1 very short) and one large parietal chloroplast. Cells occur as epineuston either as pseudocysts or with the flagella still intact. Because the chloroplasts are oriented uniformly in relation to the direction of the light, the water surface seen from a certain position will show a bright golden coloration. Cells secrete a tubiform fibrillar lorica, on the top of which they are placed, and through which they send a number of thin pseudopodia down into the water. Reproduction by division, which in the neustonic stage results in small colonies. Stomatocyst globular, with a sculptured wall. Sexual reproduction not observed. The type species has been included by Bourrelly in Chromulina, because the second flagellum was not mentioned in the original diagnosis, whereas the biflagellate observations were referred to as Ochromonas vischeri. The lorica, which was mentioned by Woronin, and the second flagellum were demonstrated by Petersen and Hansen (1958) and the species referred to Chromophyton . However, some of the other neustonic species described appear to lack the lorica. Widely distributed, mainly forming neuston on small forest ponds.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
