Description: Thalli comprising spherical to oval multicellular colonies to 60 µm diameter, with cells embedded in structureless, colorless mucilaginous envelope. Living cells at periphery of colony, firmly attached at ends of up to four generations of dichotomously arranged cell wall halves. Cells oval with rounded ends, 1.5-10 x 1.5-7 µm, smooth cell walls and distinct oil droplets. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, dividing prior to autospore formation; pyrenoids absent. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2-4 per cell; released by longitudinal division of mother cell wall into 2-4 parts. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Pseudodictyosphaerium planktonic, sporadic in spring and fall; known from Europe in rivers, pools and lakes. Genus resembles Dictyosphaerium but differs based on absence of pyrenoids.
