Type designated in: Balech, E. (1956). Étude des Dinoflagellés du sable de Roscoff. Revue Algologique, Nouvelle Serie 2: 29-52.

Description: Small to medium-sized (20-45µm) species, laterally compressed with small epicone and a large hypocone, mainly enclosed by 2 large hypothecal plates. Nucleus elongated in the dorsal part of the hypocone; numerous trichocysts and mucocysts present, with numerous elongated chloroplasts, radiating from a pyrenoid. Plate formula of the type species: Po, 3', 1a, 4" 5c, ?s, 3"' 1"", other species described with 5'". Sexual reproduction and cyst formation not known. Emend. Selina & Hoppenrath (2019: 40).
