Description: Filaments, uniseriate at first, with main axis becoming rapidly pluriseriate (except close to the base) and somewhat regularly constricted; ramifications sparse, uniseriate. Filaments attached by a basal cell surrounded by a firm, conspicuous pad of mucilage. Cell size varying with age and species, filaments reaching up to 2-3 mm in length in the type. One large golden-yellow chloroplast in young uniseriate cells, two brown parietal plastids in mature pluriseriate cells, without pyrenoids. Chrysolaminaran vacuoles and lipid droplets present. Large conspicuous, muciferous bodies have been observed in the type species and also birefringent intravacuolar crystals (1 &m in length). Individual cell walls and filament envelope thick and firm. Reproduction by aplanospores liberated by mucilage dissolution in uniseriate portions or by zoospores in pluriseriate areas, without morphologically distinct sporangia. One zoospore formed per vegetative cell. Zoospores large, ovate (6-8 ( 10-15 &m), with 2 lateral, heterokont flagella (10 and 25 &m), inserted in the anterior third of the cell. Longer undulating flagellum bears tripartite mastigonemes, while the shorter posterior flagellum is smooth and often masked by the cell body. Zoospores positively phototactic, bearing 1 chloroplast with a stigma. In culture, reproduction by liberation of multicellular fragments was also observed in C. ramosa. No stomatocysts nor sexual reproduction recorded in culture. Various studies have been devoted to C. ramosa (Gayral and Haas, 1969; Billard, 1974;Billard and others 1990), including ecological surveys (e.g. Polderman and Polderman-Hall, 1980). The habitat of C. ramosa is subject to varying salinities; the species is found in moist, brackish areas, epiphytic on halophytes or algae, generally in salt marshes and has been reported from various localities, mostly from northern Europe but also from Massachusetts and Japan. A single observation is reported from the Adriatic Sea (Schussnig, 1940).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
