Description: Thallus filamentous, densely branched, appearing as dark brown, wiry tufts, reaching 0.5-1 mm high, attached by a pigmented globose cell with initial and major axes prostrate, and branches erect or suberect. Major axis composed of globose cells similar in size and morphology to the basal cell (14-16 ( 16-19 &m) ; branches with cylindrical cells (5-8 ( 10-18 &m), constricted at septa. Reproductive axes uniseriate to pluriseriate, without morphologically distinct sporangia. Two, brown, band-shaped chloroplasts in each mature cell with a pyrenoid-like structure visible in thin-sections only. One to several refractive chrysolaminaran vacuoles. All axes limited by a gelatinous, sometimes lamellated sheath. A single zoospore is formed per cell, usually after repeated cell division of the reproductive initial. Zoospores small, spherical (3-4 &m in diam.), with 2 lateral heterokont flagella, a pleuronematic anterior flagellum (2.5 times the cell diam.) and a smooth and acronematic posterior one (1.5 times the cell diam.). Single chloroplast with a stigma. No stomatocysts nor sexual reproduction recorded in culture. Found in brackish, salt marshes, shaded wood pilings, exclusive of other possible substrates, and is known so far from a single locality in Massachusetts, USA.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
